What is tooth pigmentation?

Dental pigmentation is the change in the color of the teeth from their natural color from white to other colors, these pigmentation appear clearly when smiling, laughing or talking, which may cause embarrassment to the owner.

Types of tooth pigmentation:

Dental pigmentation is classified into two main categories:

  • External pigmentation:

They are located on the outer surface of the teeth and are of local origin resulting from the deposition of materials on the surfaces of the teeth or penetration of the tooth through enamel defects and appear in different colors on the teeth according to the main reason that led to their appearance, and we mention them:

-Green stains: seen on the front teeth of children, this color is due to the colored bacteria products that grow on the organic remains. These stains are often above the rough enamel surfaces.

-Orange stains: They are rare stains that appear in the form of thin red or orange deposits, and sometimes yellowish on the teeth, although the true cause is not known, but it is also attributed to colored germs.

-Pigmentation that appears in brown or black color: it spreads in the form of a continuous black or dark brown band on the inner gingival edge of the teeth and it forms in both sexes and at any age and has nothing to do with the products of colored germs, nor smoking nor neglecting oral health.

-Tobacco stains: They form on the surfaces of the teeth of smokers. They are yellowish pigments that tend to black, which are deposited especially on the lingual surfaces of the teeth and the surfaces covered with plaque and mucous membranes.

  • Internal pigmentation:

It occurs as a result of the deposition of materials and their fusion in the depth of the dentin and the enamel, and it also has types:

– Pigmentation arising from defective formation of dentin: affects temporary and permanent teeth. The changes that affect dentin are due to discoloration that ranges from gray to violet or brown.

– Pigmentation resulting from poor enamel formation: the enamel is thin and brown during defective enamel formation.

– Discolorations arising from hepatobiliary disorders that occur at an early age during the formation of the teeth, the bile pigments are deposited in the components of the teeth and thus the color of the teeth becomes yellowish-green.

– Pigmentation resulting from fluorosis or the so-called speckled enamel, which is poorly formed enamel as a result of ingestion of high levels of fluorine in drinking water during the period of tooth formation, development and growth, the higher the percentage of fluorine, the greater the intensity of pigmentation: its color varies according to its severity from white spots to brown or blackish pigmentation.

– Pigmentation arising from pulpal injuries: It is caused by hemorrhage in the pulp chamber, which is followed by blood destruction and the penetration of blood pigments into the dentinal tubules. Mostly from tooth trauma or pulp degeneration.

– Pigmentation arising from taking tetracycline: When tetracycline, which is an antibiotic, is given to the mother during pregnancy or to the child during the formation of the teeth, it is deposited in the tissues of the tooth, leading to the discoloration of the teeth in colors ranging from light gray or yellow to dark gray color. The pigmentation depends on the amount of tetracycline taken, and the older the child, the color of the pigment tends to brown, and it is common for the teeth to be stained by tetracycline with poor enamel.

Causes of tooth pigmentation:

  1. Eating foods that contain colorings or sauces, or drinking drinks that have long-term effects, such as tea and coffee, if periodic dental care is not taken into account.
  2. Natural or internal causes that lead to a change in the color of the tooth, such as cases of aging or
  3. Lack of fluoride or erosion of the enamel layers that protect the tooth structure from the outside.
  4. Smoking, due to the entry of nicotine and tar substances that discolor the teeth in yellowish to brownish colors, in addition to cases of complete dental erosion.
  5. Excessive exposure to fluoride in childhood, which is found in some types of toothpaste.
  6. Tooth decay that leads to a change in the color of the teeth to black.
  7. Some diseases that affect the body during the stage of tooth formation, such as liver diseases.
  8. Exposure to an injury to the teeth that prevents their growth, such as bruises.
  9. Some genetic factors.

Dental pigmentation treatment:

Staying away from unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking hookahs, etc., and this is what any smoker will notice if he prioritizes his health and the cleanliness of his teeth.

Keep using your toothbrush and toothpaste twice a day.

Clean the lime periodically.

Medical intervention under the supervision of the dentist, who in turn will perform dental treatment and whitening operations, in sessions decided by the doctor after examining the case and conducting the evaluation process, and here the doctor uses chemicals that analyze the effects of the accumulated pigment on the teeth and restore the luster of the smile and the natural color of the teeth.

The use of whitening toothpaste, which works to remove external pigments on the teeth and whiten the tooth, but a medical consultation must be consulted first before using the toothpaste

Bleaching by chemical methods that are limited only to the dentist, such as the use of oxygen water with different concentrations, usually a liquid gel that is placed on the surface of the teeth and the pigmentation is removed inside the doctor’s office under medical supervision

There is also laser whitening, which is one of the latest treatment methods used recently.

Baking soda with toothpaste: You can mix a little baking soda with your regular toothpaste to take advantage of the cosmetic benefits of baking soda.

Baking soda with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is another great product that can be used to effectively whiten teeth. You can mix half a teaspoon of diluted hydrogen peroxide with water with a teaspoon of baking soda to form a paste similar in texture to toothpaste. Brush your teeth with this mixture, and leave it on your teeth for a minute or two. Then wash it with plenty of water.

Mixing baking soda with water Use a small cup to mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water, until you have a paste-like mixture. Apply the paste directly to the stained teeth and leave for two minutes, then brush the teeth to remove the remaining part of the stain.

Banana peel: Banana peel is characterized by its benefits in whitening teeth, because it contains many necessary minerals such as potassium and magnesium, which are absorbed through the teeth, by following the following steps:

1) You should choose ripe bananas, and not use the black peel.

2) Scrub the teeth well with a fresh banana peel from the inside and immediately after peeling it.

3) While putting the banana peel on the teeth, keep the mouth open, and the lips should be away from the teeth.

4) You have to leave the banana peel for more than 5 minutes to benefit from its effects.

Charcoal: With the discovery of many safe and effective uses for teeth whitening with different materials, a recent study found that charcoal has a good effect on lightening the color of the teeth.

Experts stated that the charcoal that is being talked about for teeth whitening is not the charcoal used for grilling. Rather, it is another substance known as teeth whitening charcoal, as it consists of fine and ground black powder, made from coconut shells, olive pits, charcoal, sawdust and other materials. The charcoal used for teeth whitening has a negative electrical charge which attracts the positively charged particles present in the toxins and gases and thus absorbs and eliminates them.

Disclaimer:

The American Dental Association has not approved any charcoal products for teeth whitening.

Some experts also warn that charcoal may damage the enamel layer, so you should avoid using it too much on your teeth, as charcoal may be too harsh on the teeth, and make the whites of the teeth yellow more than before.
